World Suicide Prevention Day 2014

This is important.

It’s also really, really hard to write about. I feel like no words I can say will ever speak adequately into this issue, but I’m going to try. Hopefully my little piece in this puzzle will fit into the bigger picture, clicking into your heart and mind and making an impact.

You matter. You have been crafted by the universe’s King in a creative and wonderful way. You serve a purpose that is as unique as your fingerprint. You are needed on this earth, wherever you are, at whatever age, at whatever life stage. No one else has your story, your circle of influence, your quirks, your passions. No one else is you, and there’s a reason for that. No one else can play your part; there’s a reason for your crazy beautiful life.

I believed for a while that I didn’t matter, that I was not worth loving, and that I would never do anything good in the world. Those are all lies. The truth is, I have value. My story is important. My heart is worthy of love. To be human is not to be perfect or to have everything figured out. The beauty is in the growth, and so while you may feel you’re at rock bottom, that doesn’t last forever.

Life is hard, and giving up may seem like the only option or the best option. But it’s not. You are important to this planet, significant to humanity, essential to the world. You don’t have to fulfill any qualifications or follow a five-step manual for those truths to apply to you: you simply have to be a human. It’s okay to be an imperfect one, or one having a bad day, or one full of hopelessness. Whoever you are, you are worth it. You are completely, unconditionally, wildly worth it.

So don’t give up. The light is just around the corner.

Throw It Off

Toward the end of a season of The Biggest Loser, there’s always a challenge where the contestants have to carry around all the weight they’ve lost. “All you have to do is climb this mountain,” Alison says sweetly. “The catch? You’ll be carrying around every single pound you came here with.” That makes for a fun challenge to watch, but can you imagine if the contestants chose to carry around that extra weight with them just for the heck of it? That would be crazy, right?

But spiritually, we do the exact same thing.

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus…” -Hebrews 12:1-2

God’s forgiveness sets us free from sin. God’s power sets us free from worry. God’s comfort sets us free from fear. God’s acceptance sets us free from insecurity. So why do we still carry those burdens around with us? We fall into the traps of sin, worry, fear, and insecurity. Often it feels that those are inescapable, and we fall into an even worse trap of being unable to forgive ourselves and step into our identity in Christ.

We cannot run the race of the Christian life with those burdens on us. But the good news is, it’s not our job to lose the weight, per se. Jesus has already taken it away; we’re the ones who foolishly pick our burdens back up again. I’m not trying to say that Jesus has taken away all of our problems, but He has taken away any need to worry or feel insecure or unloved.

So the next time you’re confronted with fear or the feeling that you’re not good enough or a sin that seems to be just too much, remember that Jesus carried that burden for you on the cross. Then… throw it off. Whatever is holding you back from drawing close to God, from meaningful relationships, from loving who you are – throw it into the garbage can as fast and as hard as you can. We are not meant to struggle under the burdens of guilt, fear, worry, and insecurity. We are meant to walk in forgiveness, freedom, and confidence. So go ahead and throw off everything that makes that impossible and take the next step in this crazy awesome journey, depending on Jesus all the way.
